Transportation and Accommodation in Italy

Although traveling to Italy is an amazing experience, planning out all of your transportation and figuring out accommodations in Italy can be tricky, especially while on a budget. It is important to figure out the best types of transportation and accommodations for cheap. Italy is a popular country for tourists, and if you are planning on staying in a major city versus a smaller town, granted it will be more expensive.

Italy is roughly a 12 hour plane flight from California not including the layovers you most likely will have to go through. In order to find the cheapest flights to Italy, it is important to book your flight as far in advance as possible. Also, try and use cheap airlines that have a layover or 2. Yes, it will be more time of travel and exhaustion from the jet lag, but it is worth it because it is often much cheaper. This summer, my family had a layover in London and we decided to spend a week there before heading off to Italy.

One of the quickest and easiest ways of getting around Italy is the Italian train systems. These trains go all over Italy and by purchasing your ticket in advance, you are able to pay more for a fast bullet train that gets you from city to city in less time, or less for a train that has the usual stops. The train system is the easiest way to travel around the country and can easily connect you from small towns to major cities.

Since there is no uber in Italy besides in Milan, the best way to get around major cities and towns is by bus if it is a long trek. Walking is honestly my preferred method of getting around in Italy even though it can become very exhausting especially in the hot, humid summers. By walking, you are able to sightsee much more and experience new things.

Accommodations in Italy can be a bit pricey especially if you are staying in a large city such as Rome, Florence or Venice. If you are staying in a major city and traveling alone, I would recommend checking out a hostel. If you are traveling with others, I highly recommend checking out the Airbnb system. This allows you to rent someone’s apartment or room for a decent price and by staying with others, you can split the price. Even if you are traveling to a smaller town such as Cinque Terre, the airbnb system is probably your best bet accommodation wise.

Figuring out and booking your modes of transportation and accommodations in Italy can be tricky especially while on a budget. However, they are all a part of the traveling experience and will contribute to a memorable Italian vacation.
